The A to Z of Career Success - G

The A to Z of Career Success - G

A warm welcome into my 7th instalment of the A to Z of career success series where we have now moved onto the letter G - Good Golly Miss Molly!

Glimpse your Greatness

Most people I work with mention that they want to have more career clarity. They often say that they are stuck, maybe even paralysed by the lack of knowing what they want next in their career. For some, getting clarity can become a destination we seek before we can take action in our career.

The thing about clarity, however, is that you quite often need to take action before you can get clarity; the process of taking action reveals to you what is right for you and what is not. It also provides a glimpse of your greatness.

This might mean trying something new, speaking to somebody about a career you are interested in, learning about how to start a business on the side. When you move in the direction of the things you are interested in, your clarity will arrive naturally.

Action

We are not messing around here …. 💪
Ask yourself: What are you drawn towards right now in your career? Pay attention to your internal GPS, your intuition.

  • Do something right now to find out more information about that career or opportunity.

  • Take the first steps towards Greatness!

Growth Mindset

When it comes to how we interact with the world it is essential to have a "Growth Mindset." Rather than a "Fixed Mindset”.

Those with a Growth Mindset recognise that challenges can be overcome with persistence, strategy, and learning from mistakes.
With a Growth Mindset, you will embrace challenges and persist in the face of setbacks. Effort is seen as a path to excellence and mastery.

In this mode of thinking, criticism is seen as a useful tool to learn and become better. The success of others is seen as an inspiration to you. This all results in higher levels of achievement, satisfaction and a greater sense of free will.

Action

  • Watch this short video which explains Growth Mindset

  • Make a decision from this point on to shift from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset

Goal Setting

There is probably more information on goal setting than any other career topic, such is the attention this subject gets.
But if we boil down the key aspects into a few sentences it would be:
Bring into your conscious awareness the things you want to achieve in your career.
Clarify and intensify the reasons you want those things.
Keep these goals close by and review them regularly.

Action

  • Write down what you want to achieve in your career and bring these ideas to life in your imagination

  • Focus on the most important goals and provide some detail about when and how you will achieve these

  • Put your goals where you will see them every day

Grit

In your career it is often vital to sustaining effort over the long term, perhaps deferring short-term gratification along the way. Grit is different from resilience which is more often about the ability to recover and move forward following shorter-term challenges. Grit is about sticking with something over the longer-term, no matter how difficult it is or how many roadblocks you face.

This doesn’t mean sticking with a job you hate, of course, but to achieve meaningful things with our careers we quite often have to persist. We do this despite the daily and weekly challenges we face.

Remember in your career, you can always measure your progress by assessing whether you are moving forward, backward, or standing still.

Action

  • Clarify your career goals, identified above, and make them as attractive as possible

  • Ask yourself, before it gets tough, under what circumstances are you willing to give in?

  • Review your goals every week, and remind yourself each time of the compelling reasons why you want those goals

As always, hope you find these tips helpful and wish you happiness and good health always. Drop me a note and let me know how you are getting on. Please also forward this email to anybody that you think might be interested in the content.

Kind Regards

Mark
