Podcast Show Notes – Episode No 14

Want to get your career back on track after what has been a rocky ride over the last 14 months?

Wondering how you might get the mindset and mojo to achieve a new career vision

This week I’m talking about how to re-set your career for success.

When things haven’t exactly gone to plan …

Hello and a very warm welcome to Episode No 14 of ‘Your Bravo Career’

My name is Mark Crossfield, I’m a Professional Career Coach helping you to love your job and build a great career.

This podcast is about why your career matters

How you can enjoy what you are doing day each day at work

and how to build a great career along the way.

In this episode, I’m going to be talking about how you can re-set your career post-Covid – 19.

Now, firstly I know that Covid hasn’t gone away and in some parts of the world cases and deaths are still high. I want to be respectful of that fact.

And there is some degree of uncertainty about how the pandemic will play out and what the endgame will be.

Nevertheless, I want to talk about how we can reset our careers following the events of the last 14 months. Because, during this time, things have been different for us
And for sure our lives and careers have been interrupted

We’ve had to deal with:

-       Lockdowns and limitations on our movements
-       Additional childcare responsibilities as many schools remained closed
-       Working differently with our teams and organisations
-       A lack of confidence - In the market, our society and in many cases in us as well. Covid 19 has knocked many of us for six.

But remember, interruptions aren’t endings. In fact, we can make them into something new — and that’s what we are going to do in this episode.
We are going to make what’s next even better.
So, I have split the discussion of resetting your career into 4 parts:

-       Recommitting to your vision
-       Remapping your plans
-       Focusing on a Growth Mindset, and how to
-       Get moving with your mojo

Let’s start with Recommitting to your vision

Your vision is always a great place to start.

You see, even though we are all different we are unified by the desire to want the best for our lives and careers. Many of us, however, given what we have been through, haven’t been looking in that direction. Our focus has been elsewhere and that’s understandable.

But now it’s time to relook at your vision and to refresh what it is you are drawn to.

So, what do you want for your future?
How could life and work be for you?
Can you visualise a future you can get excited about?
This might be the same as before, or something new might be emerging …

Imagine the Olympians that had been planning and preparing for the Olympic games in 2020.
The businesses that launched in winter 2019/20
My local pub was closed for 6 months for refurbishment and opened to great fanfare in March 2020, well you can all guess what happened next
Maybe your story isn’t as monumental as these and hopefully not as detrimental

But it’s likely you have changed your outlook.

You might even have changed before Covid 19 but it took a worldwide crisis for us to see that change.

So,
-       What are you interested in now / what are you passionate about / what are you starting to get passionate about? And,
-       What’s important to you?

You see, we have to grasp the inspiration and the new sense of our direction.

It’s not just what you are doing it, it’s why you are doing it.

Maybe you are inclined to:
  • Get your business back on track to achieve an important milestone
  • Start your own business
  • Pursue a totally different career path
  • Develop a new product
So, let’s do it right now. Get your pen and paper or your digital device of choice and brainstorm ideas for your new vision.

Project yourself 3 years in the future, what does your world look like

I’m starting the clock; you’ve got 60 seconds to capture your vision ideas.

1 minute workout – Capture your new 3 year vision

Ok, well done, if you have done that. Next, we will move on to re-mapping your plan.

Re-mapping your plan

Now in this section, we are going to be looking at your plans for the next 12 months and of course, these plans will be steps along the path to your 3-year vision.

If the 3-year vision is the picture of your future.

Your plans are how we paint the picture of that future.
And the way we are going to do this is to ..

Start at the finish line

Why the finish line?
Well, for one thing, we’ve just come from the finish line- we’ve created a vision and that vision should still be clear in our minds.

Also, researchers have found that people who define their plans from the endpoint, the finish line, working backward in time to where you are now,

are both more likely to succeed,

and have greater confidence of knowing what the right steps are to achieve success.

When you think about this approach, starting at the endpoint and working forward, it does seem to make sense.
It keeps you focussed on the 3-year vision and the steps to get you there

But you don’t get bogged down in the messy middle bit quite as much.

Reverse engineering what you need to do will give you the plans and actions you need to take, to achieve success.

So, if you were planning to launch a business the reverse steps would be:

Starting at the step before the end …

-       Promote your product or service to find customers, which is preceded by
-       Securing your team to drive the business
-       Creating a website, to give you visibility and credibility
-       Creating or sourcing your product or service
-       Secure funding
-       Write a business plan

Ok, so you have a go now

Let’s do a 1 minute workout – to remap your plans, working backward from your vision.

You have 60 seconds

Ok, and when you have done this, you can put your plans into a timeline.
-       First-year
-       6 months
-       3 months
-       First month etc.

Ok, so far in this episode we have discussed how to recommit to your vision and subsequently how you can remap your plans.

And in part 2 of the episode, we will look at the importance of focusing on your Growth Mindset and how to get moving with your mojo.

Welcome back to part 2 of the podcast.

And in part 1 we focussed on your career vision, your painting, and also your plan, your brush strokes if you like.

We are now going to look at your mindset, at least one aspect of it, and how you can find your mojo and get moving.

Focus on Growth Mindset

I talked about mindsets way back in Episode 1 and here I want to focus on one aspect of the 3 mindsets I discussed back then, and this is the Growth Mindset.

And you might remember that your Mindset is just a collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your attitudes and how you typically think about things.

And how you typically think about things affects how you feel, and what action you do or don’t take. It impacts how you make sense of the world.

And when it comes to a growth mindset

Much of our understanding about Fixed and Growth Mindsets comes from Carol Dweck, and her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

Dweck showed how changing to a Growth Mindset can have a profound impact on nearly every aspect of your life.
If you have a fixed mindset, you assume that your qualities, such as intelligence, character, and ability, are relatively stable, and cannot be changed in any meaningful way.

This is a very helpful summary of the Growth Mindset which I recommend that you watch.

So, why is this important when it comes to resetting your career?
Well, it relates to how you deal with challenges. People with fixed mindsets are more likely to avoid challenges and be debilitated by failure because they believe they do not have the ability to succeed.
We don’t want that as we go through this recovery. We need a mindset that helps you to deal with new challenges and where you believe your intelligence and personality are something you can develop. This is the growth mindset.
In a moment we are going to do a 1-minute workout relating to your Growth mindset.

But first,

I want you to think about the challenges that you might face as you move towards your vision.

What are some of the hurdles that you will face as you implement the plans you identified earlier on?

What are some of the things that you will have to overcome?

These could be internal, such as confidence, self-belief or the fear of putting yourself out there

This could be about some things you need to learn or a new qualification

Or they could be milestones, such as raising finance, recruiting a team or even applying for a new job and going through the recruitment process

Make a note of what these challenges are for you, just quickly bullet points what these challenges are likely to be. Pause the podcast if you need to.

And, turning our attention back to your Growth Mindset

And remember that this mindset can have a profound impact on all these challenges

As challenges are embraced, as you persist in the face of setbacks and see effort as the path to your destination, your vision …

What kind of actions would reflect a growth mindset in these situations?

For instance, a growth mindset leads to actions like:

·      Approaching challenges and obstacles with enthusiasm and curiosity,
·      Interpreting failures as learning opportunities,
·      Learning from setbacks and trying again, and
·      Receiving criticism with an open mind.

So, let’s do another
1-minute workout

I want you to look at your list of your challenges now and list one or more actions against each one,

that describes how you deal with these challenges now you have adopted a Growth Mindset.

Go

Well done for doing that,

And remember when you change your mindset your feelings will follow, but this does not always happen immediately …

Ok, the next and final step is to …

Get Moving with your Mojo

Ok, you have refreshed your vision,
you have remapped your plans and
following the identification of the likely challenges you face on your journey
you have come up with Growth Mindset actions to deal with these challenges.

Next, today, now, we are going to get started on your journey and take the first confident steps towards your refreshed vision.

You should already be starting to feel the warm glow around your career and what the next steps should be for you.

But what should the next steps be?

Of course, every reset will be unique but,

•   - Knowing your new vision
•   - Having started your plans
•   - And having identified your likely challenges
•   - And knowing the right mindset to appropriately deal with these challenges

You will know what you need to do today. It should be obvious ..

So, let’s get started on capturing these actions for you.

Let’s do a 1-minute workout

What are you going to do today to get you started on your reset?

What’s the first thing you are going to do?

Care you going to call a connection?

Download a book?

Get some professional support?

Start now, capturing your actions that you will do today

Ok, well done, for doing that and for sticking with me on the podcast today.

You should now have everything you need to reset your career and get you moving towards your vision, including what you are going to do next, right now.

O, so I hope you are ready to step forward and create your magnificent future.
