Hello and a very warm welcome to Episode No 32 of ‘Your Bravo Career’
My name is Mark Crossfield, I’m a Professional Career Coach / helping you to love your job and build a great career.
This podcast is about why your career matters

and how to build a great career along the way.
Scene setting
In this episode, I’m joined by Master Coach Kate Trafford.
You might recall that Kate was a special guest on Episode 11, and that episode was me interviewing Kate. By the way, that episode is still the most downloaded episode of my podcast to date.
And today, we are going to be doing a collaboration episode about how you can make a good start in your new role, or new job and why these first steps lay the foundation to success.
Step 1 (3 Year Vision) (Kate)
Looking 3 years ahead, clarify your vision for the new role.
Think about:
- Your Big Picture Goals
- Things you want to have achieved in 3 years (deliver a flagship project)
- Your vision relating to people and teams (high performing teams/team ethos)
- Growth and Development (Training and development/mgt / leadership)
Step 2 (Week 1) (Mark)
The first week is about orientating yourself and making a good impression.
- Remember names
- Get to know the place
- Assimilate key information by being in ‘listening mode’
- Enjoy meeting your new colleagues and being visible
- Discuss your manager's expectations
Step 3 (Month 1) (Kate)
By the end of the 1st-month look to secure some quick wins. Focus on:
- Deliver a 'quick win' (e.g. smooth over a problem with a client)(Introduce myself / offer to fix the problem / agree on a sensible solution)
- Remember managing upwards is ok
- Managing boundaries (So important, set expectations)
- Getting to know your team (Individually and as a group)
- Map your key stakeholders (importance/strength)
Step 4 (Month 2) (Mark)
At this stage, you should be seeking to:
- Extend your internal/external networks (strength not size / give before take / ask)
- Deepen your professional relationships
- Establish your credentials as a team player (Think about the team effort but watch boundaries)
- Focus on your key deliverables
Step 5 (3 months and beyond) (kate)
After your first 100 days it is useful to seek feedback from your manager in relation to their expectations:
- What has gone well? (Convergence between performance and expectations)
- Where can you make improvements
- Deliver a significant win
- Remember feedback is good
Conclusion:
So, there you have it, the 5 steps you should take when you start a new job
Remember
Step:
1. Think about your 3- or 5-year vision
2. Focus on your first week, be in listening mode and assimilate the basics
3. Secure some quick wins at the end of the first month
4. Deepen your professional relationships and establish your team credentials at Month 2
5. Seek feedback from your manager at 3 months and beyond
And, that just leaves the Call to Action
Your call to action today is to:
