Introduction

Welcome everybody to Episode no 66

Today I’m going to delve into the topic of Career Mindset.

This topic was the subject of one of my very first podcast episodes and it has been a popular episode ever since.

So, I thought I would revisit the subject and again talk about the mindset for career success.

I’ve updated the subject and refreshed the material – so, it’s more valuable than ever and well worth a listen.

So, what is your mindset …

Well,

Your mindset is a collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your attitudes and can profoundly impact your career.

So, I’m actually going to discuss three mindsets that you can adopt to build a successful career, and give you four ways to implement them into your daily life.

So, let’s get started.

The first mindset I want to talk about is …

Responsibility Mindset:

The first mindset shift is to take responsibility for your career.

As we know, it's all too easy to look for someone else to blame for our career failures or for not reaching our goals.

Maybe it's our boss, our colleagues, or even the job market. But the truth is, our career success is our own responsibility.

Adopting a responsibility mindset means taking control of your own career. This means taking ownership of your own growth and development, seeking out opportunities, and actively working to reach your goals.

By taking responsibility for your career, you'll also be in control of your own success.

Instead of waiting for someone else to give you the green light, you'll be the one driving your career forward.

And the great thing is, you'll be more confident and self-assured in your abilities and decisions, which will only help you succeed even more.

So,

Your career is your responsibility, and by adopting this mindset, you'll be in control of your own success.

The next important mindset is …

Possibility Mindset:

Adopting a Possibility Mindset is the second mindset shift that can make a difference in your career.

If you're feeling limited or stuck in your current job or career path, it's important to understand that better opportunities may be just around the corner.

Think about it like this: if you're seeking something in your career and are unsure if it's possible, ask yourself, "Is this something that other people have achieved?" If the answer is yes, then there's no reason why it can't be possible for you too!

For example, if you want to switch careers but don't know where to start, have a look at others who have successfully made the change.

Look at their paths, what steps they took, and how they found success. This will give you a better idea of what's possible for you.

So, when you adopt a Possibility Mindset, you'll be able to approach your career with a sense of excitement and optimism.

You'll be open to new opportunities and possibilities, and this will lead you closer and closer to finding what you're truly seeking in your career.

So, nurture that Possibility Mindset, which will support success in your career journey.

Ok, the final mindset is …

Growth Mindset:

The third mindset shift that can make a difference in your career is switching from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset.

This idea was popularised by Carol Dweck's book "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," and it's a game-changer!

What does a Growth Mindset look like? Well, people with this mindset embrace challenges and view them as opportunities for growth.

They're not afraid of setbacks, because they see effort as the path to excellence. And in your career, this approach will result in higher levels of achievement, greater satisfaction, and a stronger sense of free will.

Let me give you an example. Imagine you're a salesperson and you've just had a string of rejections.

A person with a Fixed Mindset might see this as a sign they're not cut out for sales and give up. But someone with a Growth Mindset would see this as an opportunity to learn and improve.

They'd reflect on what they could do differently next time, ask for feedback, and keep going until they succeed.

In your career, adopting a Growth Mindset will allow you to approach challenges and obstacles with a positive attitude.

You'll be more likely to persist in the face of setbacks and keep striving for excellence.

And as a result, you'll achieve higher levels of success and satisfaction.

OK, so those are the three Mindsets you can adopt to help you have a great career.

Responsibility Mindset, Possibility Mindset and Growth Mindset.

Implementation

But how do we actually adopt these Mindsets?

Well, now, I am going to give you 4 ways to implement these new Mindsets.

The first one is to …

Change Your Self-Talk

Our internal self-talk has a big impact on our mindsets and attitudes towards life, including our careers.

If you're constantly telling yourself negative things like "I'll never find a job I love" or "work is never meant to be enjoyable", then your mindset is likely to hold you back in your career.

Instead, it's important to start telling yourself positive affirmations that align with the mindsets discussed in the script.

For example, you could say things like "I am in control of my career and how it turns out" or "I am moving towards finding a job that I love, even if it doesn't feel like it yet".

Try to make these affirmations a daily habit and focus on the positive outcomes you want to achieve. It may feel a bit strange at first, but over time your self-talk will begin to shape your mindset in a more positive way.

The next way is to …

Change Your Outward Communication

It's not just our internal self-talk that matters; it's also important to pay attention to what we're saying to the people around us.

The words we use can either reinforce a positive mindset or diminish its impact.

To help maintain a positive outlook, try to avoid using negative phrases like "I hate mornings" or "I hate Mondays".

Instead, try to focus on the positive aspects of your work and talk about the things you're looking forward to.

For example, you could say things like "I love the challenge of starting a new project" or "I'm excited to see what opportunities the week will bring".

By changing the way you communicate with others, you'll not only maintain a positive mindset, but you'll also be more likely to feel motivated and excited about your career.

Let’s move onto the next way you can implement these mindsets, and that’s to …

Embrace Challenges and Setbacks

With a growth mindset, you embrace challenges and persist in the face of setbacks.

This means accepting that there will be obstacles in your career and using them as opportunities to learn and grow.

For example, if you're faced with a difficult project at work, try to see it as an opportunity to learn new skills and improve your performance instead of giving up or becoming discouraged.

You could also ask for help or seek guidance from a mentor or colleague to help you overcome the challenges.

So, that’s embracing challenges and setbacks, and the final way to implement these mindsets is to  ….

Continuously Seek Learning and Growth

A growth mindset means being open to learning and continuous improvement.

This could mean taking courses or workshops to learn new skills, seeking feedback from others to identify areas for growth, or actively seeking out new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow in your career.

For example, if you're interested in transitioning to a different career, you could start by volunteering for related projects or taking courses in the field to gain experience and build your skills.

By continuously seeking growth and learning opportunities, you'll be able to develop a stronger skill set and be more confident in your career choices.

Conclusion:

So, there you have it.

Three mindsets to adopt for a successful career, and four ways to implement them.

The three Mindsets you can adopt to help you have a great career are:

Responsibility Mindset, Possibility Mindset and Growth Mindset.

And

The 4 ways to implement these new Mindsets are:

-       Change your self talk
-       Change your outward communication
-       Embrace challenges and setbacks, and
-       Continuously Seek Learning and Growth

Remember, your mindset is a powerful tool; by adopting the right mindset, you'll be on your way to a successful and fulfilling career.
