Scene setting
I’m joined by published author and salary negotiation expert Michael Phillips in this episode.
Michael W Phillips is the founder and head of Phillips Consulting, a niche management consulting firm specialising in commercial negotiations for public and private sector companies.
For almost 30 years, he has led negotiations for organisations as diverse as the NHS, local councils and global manufacturing corporations.
He's negotiated contracts for everything from nursing home placements to cinema screens, orthopaedic implants to sewage pumps, and liquid helium to truck leases.
With clients in the UK, Europe, the USA and Asia, Michael has travelled the world for decades practising and coaching the science of negotiation.
As one Amazon review says - this book is very cleverly positioned as an easy-to-read fictional tale that shows clear steps to successful negotiation.
So how about we meet Michael and learn how to negotiate a better salary?
Post Interview
It was great to talk to Michael today and to hear his inspiration behind writing the book – I hope you enjoyed the episode.
Michael highlighted some of the common mistakes people make during salary negotiations.
And the importance of researching salary expectations specific to your role and industry.
Michael offered valuable advice to navigate the process successfully for those negotiating their salary for the first time.
Michael also gave us some more advanced tips on how to prepare for a salary negotiation, stressing the significance of considering non-salary benefits like flexible hours or remote/hybrid work options.
Michael also addressed the concerns of individuals who may feel uncomfortable with confrontation or assertiveness during negotiations. He shared strategies to help them navigate these situations effectively.
Towards the end, he provided a list of negotiation resources for listeners to explore the topic further. I will put a list of these in the show notes.
The book '
Getting More' by Stuart Diamond.
In conclusion, Michael's advice for listeners who aspire to love their job and build a great career was insightful and inspiring.
His expertise in salary negotiation serves as a valuable tool for individuals seeking to improve their negotiation skills and achieve greater professional satisfaction.
