Episode Transcript: Balancing Two Paths – Insights on Parallel Careers with Christine Coulson

Welcome to the Podcast
Hi, I’m Mark Crossfield, a professional career coach here to help you transform mid-career uncertainty into an exciting journey of self-discovery and reinvention. Whether you’re feeling stuck, seeking new opportunities, or looking to bring more meaning into your work, this podcast is your roadmap to transforming your career.

In today’s episode, I’m delighted to welcome back Christine Coulson, a sobriety and wellbeing coach who also works part-time as an NHS radiographer. We’re diving into the concept of parallel careers and sharing our own experiences balancing two professional roles.

What is a Parallel Career?
Mark:
When I describe a parallel career, I mean committing to two different professional roles at the same time—more than just a casual side hustle. Both roles demand real focus and energy, but they often complement each other in surprising ways. For me, balancing my coaching business with a part-time role at the Institution of Civil Engineers has been energizing and fulfilling.

Christine’s Journey to a Parallel Career
Christine:
I retrained as a radiographer in my early 30s, transitioning from a career in finance. I now work part-time in the NHS, specialising in CT scans, which I love. After I quit alcohol in January 2022, I realised how much sobriety coaching could help others. That led me to start Your Sober Path alongside my NHS work. It’s been a rewarding way to use my personal experiences to support others.

Benefits of a Parallel Career
Christine:
The biggest benefit for me is financial stability. My NHS job provides security—especially during difficult times like the pandemic. It also supports me when I need sick leave or a break. Coaching, on the other hand, fulfills my passion for helping people and gives me personal growth. Balancing both roles has allowed me to develop skills like empathy, better listening, and problem-solving, which also enhance my radiography work.

Mark:
I’ve found that having two roles brings a sense of variety that keeps me energized. For example, my coaching and my work at the Institution of Civil Engineers overlap in terms of supporting people’s growth, but they’re distinct enough to keep things fresh.

Challenges of Balancing Two Careers
Christine:
Time and energy management can be tough. I’ve learned to use a colour-coded calendar to balance my commitments—radiography is in red, client sessions are in dark green, and admin tasks are in light green. That helps me see at a glance when I need to pull back or plan ahead.

I’ve also had to accept that I won’t pursue advanced certifications in radiography anymore. My energy is focused on growing my coaching business. It’s about being realistic with the time and resources I have.

Mark:
Boundaries are key. For me, that means physically closing down my work with the Institution of Civil Engineers before switching to my coaching role. This separation ensures I give each role my full attention.

Practical Tips for Starting a Parallel Career
Mark:
If you’re considering a parallel career, start small. Experiment with a side project alongside your current role before making major changes like reducing hours. This allows you to test your interest and get feedback without taking on too much risk.

Christine:
Be honest with yourself about your capacity and limitations. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to adjust. And remember, even small steps—like registering a domain name or exploring training opportunities—can lead to big changes over time.

Closing Reflections
Mark:
Christine, it’s been fantastic hearing how your parallel career works for you. I think your insights will resonate with anyone considering this path.

Christine:
Thank you, Mark. I’ve really enjoyed sharing my story. For anyone listening, I’d just say: life’s too short not to try something that excites you. Take small, sensible steps and see where they lead.
