144. How to Make a Great Start in a New Mid-Career Role

Starting a new role mid-career can be exciting, but it can also feel unsettling. Expectations are often higher, you’re stepping into unfamiliar systems and relationships, and it’s easy to feel pressure to prove yourself quickly.

In this episode, I share some practical ideas that can help you approach those early months in a thoughtful way so you can settle into the role, build credibility and create momentum.

Rather than rushing to make a dramatic impact, the first few months are often best spent understanding the organisation, building relationships and contributing in meaningful ways.

In this episode I explore how you can approach this transition with clarity and confidence.

In this episode I talk about

Why starting a new role mid-career can feel challenging

Even experienced professionals often experience a dip in confidence when starting a new role. I talk about what I sometimes call the “Imposter Spiral” and why this is a normal part of transition.

Clarifying what success looks like

One of the most helpful things you can do early on is to understand what success looks like from your manager’s perspective. Aligning expectations early can prevent frustration later.

Spending the early weeks in listening mode

Before trying to demonstrate your expertise, it often pays to take time to observe how the organisation works. I talk about noticing how decisions are made, how people communicate and what really matters.

Understanding the people who make things happen

Success in most roles depends heavily on relationships. Identifying and connecting with key stakeholders early can make your work much easier later on.

Making a thoughtful early contribution

Instead of rushing into major changes, I suggest looking for small ways to contribute and support the team. Thoughtful early contributions help build credibility and trust.

Building momentum in the first 90 days

The early months in a new role can feel overwhelming. I introduce a simple journaling approach called Career Momentum Writing that can help you recognise the progress you are making.

Taking stock after the first 90–100 days

Pausing to reflect on what you’ve learned and seeking feedback from your manager can help you shape the next phase of the role.
